A professor's murder at a small New England college and a forgotten manuscript lead recently retired school teacher, Richard MacKenzie, and his wife, Morgana, through a labyrinth of secrets, deceptions, and murder. Will revelations about Morgana's past hinder the ongoing investigation about the professor's death, and damage her marriage? Will Richard be able to save his brother's job? Will the killer be found before he strikes again? Everything depends on Richard. Who said retirement is like a walk in the park?

THE THIRD MURDERER Richard and Morgana MacKenzie Mysteries Book 1 edition by Jack Flanagan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Guy and his wife go to funeral for a former friend of hers. While visiting, another death occurs and they work with the newly appointed sheriff to solve the case. The premise is interesting. How and why the killings commit is good story groundwork. In the right hands this tale could really shine.

This story was tedious to read at times due to overwriting that was cumbersome and clumbsy to read. There was an overabundance of redundant information (we are told Kyle is newly appointed sherriff over 5 times). The meandering off case /topic into unnecessary details was distracting. The numerous errors related to grammar and punctuation made reading stilted and gave some pretty unusual visuals (kyle wattling (google it) rather than waddling is just one example. Another good one is : woman neatly donning (donning means putting on - NOT ALREADY CLAD) a creased long black skirt, a white shirt, and a red apron - did she come to work naked that she needed to be dressing while approaching a table in restaurant?)

Mrs. Hoff to go and find custodian for get help...
Morgana was caught of guarded...
I tried to piloted our talk...
decided to just abandoned...
soup of du jour
and the starry eyed Hana to scampered off...
There are literally errors every other page - though I will stop with examples here.
wrong tenses used related to subject verb agreement, missing punctuation, over punctuation, incorrect punctuation usage (ellipsis), missing words, wrong words, wrong tenses, first person and third person switches...and on and on. Coupled with the mellifluous writing, a plot that MIGHT be enjoyable is lost.

I read in description bio this is a former teacher. I suspect it was NOT an English teacher in any level school (elementary, middle or highschool).

Not recommended (even for the merit premise wise) until or unless the author shows some rudimentary editing done as respect for his readers who he is expecting to pay for this.

THE THIRD MURDERER Richard and Morgana MacKenzie Mysteries Book 1 edition by Jack Flanagan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I do agree with other reviewers that this work needs heavy editing in many ways; however the plot is worthy of the additional work.

If the redundancy was removed the work would flow nicely and be a very enjoyable light mystery. With the humor and light sexual content many would enjoy this work. It would even be possible to become a series. Two English teaching professionals and a county sheriff would make an unlikely crime solving trio.

Ignore the need for editing and continue reading to find the unlikely culprit.
Verb tense was often wrong, book needs a good spellcheck, proofread and edit. Hard to follow in places due to bad grammar, incorrect word use and missing punctuation. Plot and story telling was good. The book lacks the final step to make it polished and professional.
I listened rather than read the book so that any quarrels reviewers have had with matters of sentence structure, spelling and other formal aspects will have flowed past me either without my knowing (spelling) or having the time to note (most grammar errors). As any writer for radio knows (as does any speech writer or lecturer), reception of the flow of words is very different from the stable platform of the written word. What I did note were such things as less than mellifluous use of adjectives and somewhat clumsy expressive wording. For me these were by no means a significant deterrent to enjoyment; after all, if I have accustomed myself to the verbal style and pronunciations of the kindles male robot, it is easy to see why minor humanoid defects (if the author,in fact, manifests these to the average reader) should not trouble me.
In the team of retired history teacher and active scholar, the author has the basis for a successful series. While the details of their puzzle-solving are sometimes cumbersome, and the general style is somewhat forced, these are minor difficulties which should not deter most readers. The format is in the classic tradition, that is, there is a "locked room" dilemma and clues are used to arrive at a solution. At this price, I think most readers of the traditional form will be entertained; whether it would do well going head to a head (at the same price) with the (late) Stuart Kaminsky (Toby Peters) or others with greater command of style, is an open question which need not be resolved. I think many readers will find the purchase worthwhile and that we all can expect successor volumes in the series to show continual improvement.,
I have only read the first two chapters and I am not sure if I will read further. The grammar is terrible and there are spelling errors. As has been said before this book desperately needs editing.
I came to look at the reviews because I thought maybe is was translated from another language.
This is one of the most egregious examples of a book needing an editor that I've ever come across. But first, the plot. A retired high school teacher and his academic wife return to Vermont for to attend a funeral for her college boyfriend. The teacher's brother is the newly-elected sheriff and so they get dragged into a double-murder investigation. The plot is so-so and the ending, frankly, didn't pay off in my eyes.
However, the true tragedy of this book is the horrendous editing, or should I say lack of editing. If this person had an editor then that editor should never, ever be used again. The author here seems to leave prepositions out of every other sentence and, strangely, mixes up tenses; for example, a "thank you" would be a "thanked you" written as part of a present tense sentence. There's even one part of the book where the author confuses the name of the restaurant, where the characters meet, from one page to the next, the Maple Slope Diner changing to the Pine Slope Diner and then back to Maple Slope Diner a few paragraphs later.
I truly don't understand why someone would publish a book and not have it thoroughly edited. If I were an editor, I would have returned thisdraft drowning in a sea of red marks. The editing was so bad that the only reason I finished the book at all is that it was such a light, easy read.
